Core Technical Skills
- Refrigeration System Diagnostics & Repair – Ability to troubleshoot and repair commercial refrigeration systems such as walk-in coolers/freezers, reach-ins, ice machines, and display cases.
- Electrical Troubleshooting – Reading wiring diagrams, testing circuits, diagnosing motors, relays, contactors, and control boards.
- Refrigerant Handling – Safe handling, charging, recovery, and leak detection of refrigerants (EPA certified).
- HVACR System Knowledge – Understanding of compressors, evaporators, condensers, expansion valves, and defrost systems.
- Preventive Maintenance – Performing scheduled maintenance such as coil cleaning, belt inspection, pressure checks, and system performance verification.
- Control Systems Knowledge – Experience with electronic controllers, thermostats, sensors, and defrost timers.
- Pressure & Temperature Analysis – Ability to interpret superheat, subcooling, and pressure readings to diagnose issues.
Certifications & Licensing
- EPA Section 608 Certification (required in the U.S.).
- Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record.
- HVAC/R Technical Certification or Trade School Training (preferred or required by many employers).
- Equipment Experience
- Servicing walk-in coolers and freezers.
- Repairing commercial ice machines.
- Working on supermarket rack systems (preferred for higher-level technicians).
- Experience with remote condensing units and refrigeration racks.
Tools & Technical Competencies
- Use of manifold gauges, multimeters, clamp meters, vacuum pumps, and recovery machines.
- Ability to braze and solder refrigeration lines.
- Reading blueprints, wiring diagrams, and service manuals.
Soft Skills
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting mindset.
- Customer service skills for interacting with restaurant/store managers.
- Time management and ability to work independently in the field.
- Clear communication and service documentation.
- Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in confined or cold spaces.
- Comfortable working on ladders and rooftops.
- Ability to work on-call, evenings, or weekends for emergency service.
Experience
- 5+ years of commercial refrigeration or HVACR service experience (typical requirement).
- Experience working with restaurants, supermarkets, or food service equipment.
